Sisters, 11 and 14, killed in crash on I-20 in Abilene

At least one person is dead after an accident involving four vehicles and an 18-wheeler on westbound I-20 in Abilene.

Two sisters -- ages 11 and 14 -- are dead after an accident Friday morning on westbound I-20 in Abilene.

The accident occurred about 8:15 a.m.

Chief Stan Standridge said the rear axle of a utility vehicle sheared off near mile marker 20. The rear wheels then came off and the truck flipped. Two people in that vehicle were transported to Hendrick Medical Center in good condition.

An 18-wheeler carrying steel i-beams then stopped to avoid the wreck.

A mother in a minivan or SUV managed to avoid the 18-wheeler but was rear-ended by a full size pickup. The back of the family's vehicle was "crunched" -- killing the kids. Their mom was taken to Hendrick for treatment.

Standridge said the family is from the Big Country. The victims names will not be released until next of kin is notified.

"My heart aches for this family," said Standridge.

As a result of the two wrecks, westbound I-20 was closed for several hours between Elmdale Road and Hwy 351.
