Local golfers shine in final round of West Texas Jr. Open

ABILENE, TX - It was a hot afternoon for golf on Thursday, as the West Texas Junior Open concluded final round action at Abilene Country Club.

In girls 15 to 18 division, Brownwood's Sydney Roberts came in as the leader, tied with Abilene's Maddi Olson at five over par.

Roberts on the 9th hole had to chip from the trees, and her second shot on the par three would go in. A fantastic birdie make there, as Roberts goes on to win shooting a 69 for the day, four over for the tournament. Olson, who fell late, ended the tournament second, eleven strokes behind Roberts.

Over in boy's action, Brownwood's Jaryn Pruitt and Wylie's Tyler O'connor sat in 9th and 10th respectively coming in. Both looking good in later rounds, but the leaders would pull away. Pruitt ending the day 7 th , while O'Connor fell to 16 th , 19 strokes back. Some other local area players found their stride, as coming in 4th and 6th into the final round, Abilene's Cauthen Gunner and Sweetwater's Michael Hunt continued to play well into the later stages of the round.

Hunt would separate himself into a podium finish of 3 rd place after shooting a 71, seven over par. Gunner would drop a few spots but earns a top 10, coming in 9 th place with a 79 final round, eleven shots back of the leader. The winner of the boys division, San Angelo's Flynn McNabb who rallied in the final round from 3 rd to take the win, after a score of 70, two-over par.

And earlier, the 8 and 9 year old co-ed champion was Abilene's Wyatt Nickson, who shot an 80 to take home the trophy.
