More parents refusing vaccinations for kids at Big Country schools

ABILENE, Texas - More people are rejecting getting vaccinated at schools in the Big Country, according to The Immunization Partnership.

The non-profit organization held a meeting at the Hendrick Medical System Thursday to discuss low vaccination rates.

The number of non-medical vaccine exemptions filed in Taylor County have increased ten-fold in the past five years.

A non-medical vaccine exemption could be religious or personal beliefs.

"A lot of research shows that non-medical exemptions tend to cluster geographically -- they tend to cluster in schools, they cluster in neighborhoods," said Rekha Lakshmanan with The Immunization Partnership. "When that clustering effect happens, you're at risk for a disease outbreak."

Jones County has seen non-medical exemptions increase to four times the rate five years ago.
