Rainfall totals: Fifth wettest May on record in Abilene


ABILENE, Texas - May 2016 will go into the record books as the fifth wettest May on record for Abilene.

This May, 8.53 inches of rain was recorded at Abilene Regional Airport.

The normal May rainfall for Abilene is only 3.18 inches. So, we finished with a surplus of 5.35 inches.

While eight and one half inches is a lot of rain, it didn't come close to the all-time record for May rainfall in Abilene of 13.19 inches set in 1957.

As you might expect, we are also above normal for rainfall in 2016. The total from Jan. 1 through May 31, 2016, is 17.80 inches. That is nearly nine inches above what we would normally expect to see during the first five months of the year.
