Safety a top concern in Abilene fireworks display
ABILENE, Texas - Safety comes first as WesTex Connect prepares for the fireworks show at Nelson Park Friday.
"Fireworks is a dangerous business..." said Rodney Amonett, general manager of WesTex Connect, "there are plenty of precautions that we take."
One of the precautions is that all pyro-technicians are required to take an 8 hour safety course. When completed, each attendee must also pass a demo show with an supervisor watching over them.
Other precautions taken include storing fireworks in metal containers, transporting them in plastic or anti-static bags, and no smoking on the premises.
Even the smallest mistake could end in disaster.
"We don't allow the guys to use scissors," said Amonett, "because obviously if you're cutting a fuse, metal and 2 things rubbing together could cause a spark or something, and all it takes is 1 spark and up it goes."
They also make sure to only work on one case of fireworks at a time, to prevent confusion.
The fireworks show will begin at 9:55 pm. Friday, at Nelson Park and is also sponsored by Sharon's BBQ and Taylor Electric.
Other events will also be held before the start of the show:
6:00 p.m. – the Abilene Zoo opens
6:30 p.m. – Festival Gardens opens
7-8:30 p.m. – Sharon's Bar-B-Q will serve dinner
