2 Big Country school districts close due to flu, other illnesses

For the third straight week, multiple Big Country school districts have canceled classes due to a high number of absences.

For the third straight week, multiple Big Country school districts have canceled classes due to a high number of absences.

Hermleigh and Breckenridge ISDs will be closed Thursday and Friday.

“Due to the continuation of this flu and strep epidemic, and the vast number of students that are still absent from school, Hermleigh ISD has made the difficult decision to cancel school for the remainder of this week,” the district said in a social media post.

Hermleigh ISD has hired Germblast of Lubbock to “come in and deep clean every square inch of the school.”

This is the second flu related closure for Hermleigh ISD. It also closed Jan. 25-26

Breckenridge ISD will be closed after attendance dropped to 85 percent -- with one campus below 80 percent.

“Cancelling school is always a difficult decision because there are many unintended consequences, and we never cancel school without considering as many of those as we can,” the district said in a social media message.

“Undoubtedly, there are issues we have not thought of in this respect, but this decision was made with agreement of the entire administrative team.”

Last week, six Big Country schools closed due to illness.
