Construction expected to start in June for Cross Plains' $1.4 million tornado shelter

State and federal agencies have approved the design plans for a new tornado shelter in Cross Plains, giving the project the green light to build.

The Cross Plains Independent School District was awarded a $1.4 million grant a year and a half ago by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for a tornado shelter. The building will double as a gymnasium.

According to the architectural firm that designed the shelter, Jacob and Martin, they expect construction to begin on the project in early June.

Cross Plains ISD business manager Linda Birdwell said that the next step is to put out bids for contractors who would put together the tornado shelter.
