Dave Campbell's: District 3-3A will test Big Country teams

The Big Country is gearing up for the start of the fall preseason in just a handful of weeks, and so we continue our district previews and Dave Campbell's predictions in District 3-3A Division I.

The Clyde Bulldogs hope that 2015 was just a building block into this season, as preseason offensive MVP Tanner Riley returns under center with this talented group.

Riley comes off a fantastic season with 3,200+ passing yards and 39 TD's. But keep an eye on Brandon Berry, who hauled in almost 600 yards receiving in 2015.

But the big task for the Bulldogs, is finding solidarity at the defensive front. Jim Ned:

Jim Ned enters the season with second year head coach Jerod Womack that saw a .500 district season a year ago that included a first round playoff exit. The team hopes to fix that, working with a triple threat option in Dillon McCoy at quarterback this year.

The Indians only return 9 starters, so look for two way threat Connor Atkins and linebacker Pierce Atchinson to pick up the slack on both sides of the ball.

The Merkel Badgers hope 2016 is a turn-around year. After a 2-4 district season, Merkel was left on the outside of the playoff cut.

Fourteen starters return for this season, including two-way starter Hayden Byers and Tatian Gonzalez, but the key will be finding a spot for speedy sophomore Jonah White who played as a freshman.

But all eyes will be on running back Matt Holmes, who will power the offense.

The Early Longhorns are also in the same boat, hoping for improvement from a 2-win season.

Wide receiver Drew Sessler will be the Longhorns top target in 2016 as Tyler Kirkland works for the starting QB job this year. It will also be a welcome back for Miguel Elizondo, who went down with an injury last season after leading the Longhorn rushing attack.

Here's how the district is predicted to finish according to Dave Campbell's Texas Football:

Brady Clyde Comanche Jim Ned *Merkel *Early

*= projected to miss playoffs
