Eula teams feeling pressure heading into final district stretch

CLYDE, TX - The high school basketball regular season is quickly coming to an end, and as usual, you can't mention top Big Country teams without naming the Eula Pirates.

Both girls and boys programs continue to march up the TABC rankings as the district season comes to a close. The Lady Pirates are ranked 12 th in class 1A, with the boys 13 th according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

"I pick Josh's brain every chance that I get," said girls head coach Jamie Masonheimer about working with boys head coach Josh Fostel.

And they've earned it. The Pirates sport an unbeaten district record going into Friday's game with Rising Star -- and the girls have just one district loss on a 20-6 season. Both teams pace their district standings with a couple weeks to go.

"We all have to treat the game as if it's like a playoff game," said junior Megan Scott. "We just have to keep our mentality in focus."

For a school that is used to success, this week doesn't mean they aren't feeling the heat of the looming regular season end, as they both feed off one another in search for a deep playoff run.

Oh yeah," said senior Eyan Huffaker shaking his head in agreement. "The pressure gets harder the further you go in the season."

"We pull for each other and it's kind of just a ritual this time of year that both teams are going to be heavily involved in the playoffs so it's fun for the kids and the community," added boys head coach Josh Fostel.
