Indians enjoying hot start to 2017 season

TUSCOLA, Texas - After a season of growing pains, frustration, and at often times - lack of confidence, Jim Ned football is back on the scene in the Big Country.

The Indians, who host Anson in a big 2A/3A match-up on Friday, are off to a hot start after finishing 3-7 a year ago.

They're 2-0 and rolling - following an opening week rout of Coleman, and impressive beat down of Goldthwaite last week.

"I feel like the energy is really getting us pumped up and just knowing we're 2-0 going into this game, it's just going to be really fun," smiled senior Brandon Amidon.

For those that follow area football, it's hard to believe coach Jerod Womack's team was outside the playoff cut just a handful of months ago.

"The guys are just coming together as a team right now and that's the most important thing," said Womack at Wednesday's practice. "The leadership just continues to grow and the guys are having fun which is great to see."

"You can see that we've grown as a team and as a family which is a big factor for us," said senior OL Payton Weatherly. "It's just been so fun.

But now, its eyes forward to Anson, a program used to playing into December - and one that will give the Indians all they have on Friday.

"It's going to be a great challenge where they're QB is good, and their running backs are good," said Womack. "Their defense flys to the ball, and just they do things that we need to see and being in an environment that will showcase two teams that are 2-0 is a game we want to be in and compete in those kind of games."

And with a group of senior class of leaders, this team is showing they're true contenders this season, bringing with it a new vibe during the week.

"Practice seems to be a blast right now," said Weatherly. "It's not work, or anything like that. It's just fun and we enjoy being out here."

Added coach Womack, "That's what I'm so proud about with these guys is they continue to be who they are Monday through Thursday which allows you to have a chance and an opportunity to have success on Friday."

Jim Ned and Anson kick-off from Tuscola at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
