Lake J.B. Thomas bounces back from drought
SCURRY COUNTY, Texas - Five years ago, Lake JB Thomas in Scurry County was on the verge of extinction but for the second year in a row the lake is thriving.
The lake is nearly 70 percent full, but in 2011 you could walk across it.
"It was real sad," Connie Payne said.
Payne's father Buddy Payne owns Buddy's Bait and Tackle near Lake JB Thomas. She said with the lake nearly full, business is booming.
"Here lately on the weekends they're doing really well," Payne said.
Joe Rodriguez came to the bait shop all the way from Odessa to see just how full JB Thomas was.
"There's a lot of water out there," Rodriguez said.
Last year the lake was 75 percent full, a feat which hasn't been accomplished since 1964.
"We are just really excited about the lake," Payne said. "It really helps business."
Daily boat passes for Lake JB Thomas cost $5, passes for the whole year cost $60.
