May 22 storm produced 8 tornadoes in Big Spring
BIG SPRING, Texas - The National Weather Service in Midland, Texas released its detailed report on the severe weather that affected the Big Spring area Sunday. It was determined that one long-lasting supercell thunderstorm produced eight tornadoes.
The first tornado touched down about 10 miles west of Big Spring a little after 6 p.m. Sunday. The last tornado lifted just south of Garden City a little after 9 p.m.
Four of the tornadoes were rated EF-2 or EF-3. The highest estimated winds were near 160 mph. The other four tornadoes were rated EF-0.
Severe homes and buildings were destroyed. Two oil field pump jacks were blown over by the high winds. Despite the damage, there were no fatalities and no serious injuries reported.
