Flu, strep, stomach virus close Rotan schools

41 students -- about 15-percent of the student body -- out sick with two different strands of the flu, strep, and stomach virus.

Rotan ISD is closed Monday and Tuesday after a large percentage of the districts students were out sick Friday.

Superintendent Greg Decker said they had 41 students -- about 15-percent of the student body -- out sick with two different strands of the flu, strep, and stomach virus.

Twenty-one of the sick students attend the elementary campus. The other 20 are at the secondary campus.

Four employees were also out sick.

"After meeting with my administration team, we decided that cancelling school Monday and Tuesday was the best thing to do for our district," Decker said.

The school district posted a message on its website that reads “NO SCHOOL Monday, January 22, 2018 and Tuesday, January 23, 2018 for ROTAN ISD due to Illness.”

It posted a similar message on its Facebook page. The post asks students to “please take this time to rest.”

The maintenance, daycare, and cafeteria staffs will be disinfecting buildings Monday and Tuesday.

"We will continue to take every precaution to help prevent the spreading of these illnesses," Decker said.

Classes are scheduled to resume Wednesday.
