Police: Trucker faces DWI charge after backing into patrol car

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Brownwood police accuse a trucker of being drunk behind the wheel and backing his 18-wheeler into a patrol vehicle.

Stephen Kirkwood, 30, was arrested Wednesday night for driving while intoxicated.

According to a police report, Kirkwood was at a stop sign near the intersection of Morris Shepherd Drive and U.S. Highway 377. After moving forward, police claim he then stopped his semi and put it into reverse, striking the officer's car.

The officer attempted to escape, putting his car in reverse and sounding the horn, but had to stop when he noticed a vehicle behind him, according to the police report.

The officer noticed Kirkwood's "eyes had a glassy appearance" and "he seemed somewhat unsteady on his feet," according to the report.

Kirkwood later admitted to drinking a beer and was placed under arrest for DWI after failing a field sobriety test.

Kirkwood remained in jail Thursday on a $2,500 bond, according to the Brown County Jail's website.
