SWEETWATER, Texas - Thanksgiving week has traditionally been about football for the Sweetwater Mustangs, and 2017 isn ' t any different.

But they ' re still thankful to be back in the area round of the high school football postseason, after facing some late season adversity. The Mustangs lost a few key players to injury in the stretch run of district - seeing a perfect season end with 2 losses. The first to eventual champ Seminole, and then the following week to Monahans that put Sweetwater in the postseason as a 3-seed.

But now, Sweetwater is full-strength once more, and getting back to their usual self as they begin what they hope is another deep run through the postseason. That health is showing too, with the Mustangs putting up 60 points in Fridays bi-district win over Perryton.

" I think our kids have grasped the concepts a little bit better at this point and we ' re kind of starting to roll with some new ones, especially in the run game, but our kids are learning them, " said first-year head coach Ben McGeehe. " I ' m proud of the way they ' ve adapted and executed them in recent weeks. "

And with the reminder of last year's run to state, the experience of the postseason -- especially for the seniors, plays right in their hands as they prepare for Vernon on Friday.

"Oh they talk about it all the time and it just makes me want to you know, help out and make them get there," said senior Kaden Garrett who actually is in his first season at Sweetwater since moving from Cooper.

"I wouldn't say we're comfortable at this point because anything can happen, but we definitely know what's going on at this point of the season," said senior QB Chris Thompson. "It's been real energetic. We know that nothing is guaranteed now -- you have to win to move on."

Sweetwater and Vernon kickoff from Breckenridge on Friday at 7 p.m.
