Police: Teen dies in accidental shooting after man tried to clear shotgun malfunction

Miguel Angel Herrera-Chico was arrested and faces a charge of manslaughter.

A 15-year-old boy has died after being shot by a 25-year-old man who was “recklessly” trying to clear a malfunction in a shotgun, police said.

The El Paso Police Department tweeted about the incident just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. It happened on Dale Road near Ramona Elementary School.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Jay Diaz with a gunshot wound to his chest, police said.

He was taken to Del Sol Medical Center, where he later died, police said.

The investigation revealed that Miguel Angel Herrera-Chico, 25, was trying to clear a malfunction in a shotgun when he accidentally shot the teen, police said.

Herrera was arrested and faces a charge of manslaughter.

He was booked into the county jail on a $50,000 bail.
