4 baboons escape from West Side research facility
SAN ANTONIO —
Four baboons escaped from a West Side research facility around 3:15 PM Saturday.
The Southwest National Primate Research Center, which is part of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute and is located on West Military Drive, said the baboons left their enclosure and got out of the perimeter fence surrounding the property.
Three of the baboons were captured by a team within 30 minutes. The were checked out by veterinarians, who confirmed they were alright.
The fourth baboon returned to the enclosure and has been accounted for.
"Our immediate concern has been for the safety of the animals, personnel and our neighbors in the surrounding area," the institute said in a statement. "Our animal capture team and entire animal care team acted diligently to locate, secure and account for all four baboons."
The Southwest National Primate Research Center is home to about 2,900 nonhuman primates, including chimpanzees and a variety of monkey species.
