Cost of vehicle registration and inspection could increase if bill passes
AUSTIN, Texas - A state lawmaker proposed nearly doubling what you pay to register and inspect your vehicle each year.
Republican Representative Drew Darby of San Angelo authored HB 3664.
He says it's needed to pay for transportation and road construction, as well as maintenance, as Texas' population continues to grow.
Currently the fee to register vehicles 6000 pounds and under is $50.75 per year. Under the bill, that cost would go up by $30.
The state inspection fee is currently $14.95, if the bill becomes law, it will go up to $30.
Darby says the fees haven't been changed since 1985.
