Man arrested in fatal Texas shooting over weed eater
LIBERTY, Texas (AP) - Authorities say a man has been charged with fatally shooting a Southeast Texas man who had his weed eater.
Liberty County sheriff's office said Monday that 28-year-old Melvin Morales-Rivas was charged with murder in the early Sunday death of 45-year-old Vincente Rodriguez.
Officials say Rodriguez was shot in his front yard after going outside to try to extinguish his burning vehicle. Rodriguez and his wife were initially awakened by someone knocking on their door.
Officials say the man who knocked on the door later went to police, saying the fire and shooting were a surprise to him. He thought Morales-Rivas just wanted to talk to Rodriguez.
Rodriguez's wife told authorities her husband said he found the weed eater.
Morales-Rivas was jailed Monday, where records didn't list an attorney for him.
