Beard signs extension with Texas Tech Red Raiders
LUBBOCK, Texas —
After a year that saw Red Raider basketball sit inside the top 15 for nine straight weeks, and 13-straight inside the top 20 of the AP rankings, Texas Tech University has put its commitment to second-year head coach Chris Beard to paper.
Monday, just one day following the naming of Beard as Co-Coach of the Year for the Big 12 Conference, Beard agreed to a 6-year contract extension with Texas Tech, good through the 2023-2024 season. The cost? Beard's contract is expected to be upwards of $19 million.
Beard, who's also up for National Coach of the Year honors, had coaching stops included here in Abilene -- both as a grad assistant at ACU, and then as head coach of the McMurry War Hawks for a season. He now has led the Red Raiders to a 23-8 overall record this season, 11-7 in the Big 12 and to a No. 14 national ranking.
Texas Tech will start the Big 12 postseason tournament as a 2-seed this week, taking on the winner Texas and Iowa St. on Thursday in the quarterfinals.
