Cowboys explode for 17 runs in win over Howard Payne
BROWNWOOD, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team set season highs in runs and hits in a 17-10 American Southwest Conference win over Howard Payne on Friday afternoon at Don Sheppard Park in Brownwood.
HSU jumped out to a 13-2 lead after six and a half innings, but the Yellowjackets scored a total of eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Cowboys scored twice in the first on a two-run single by Brandon Walker. HPU scored a run in the third on a Cody Cain RBI single. HSU made it 5-1 in the fourth with three runs on four hits. Caleb Jacques had an RBI single and Jon Finney added a two-run triple.
HPU scored a run in the fourth on a Michael Daniel RBI single and HSU busted the game open with five runs in the sixth to make it 10-2. Jacques had an RBI single, a pair of runs scored on a pair of throwing errors and Marcus Uechi had a two-run home run.
HSU made it 13-2 in the seventh with a two-run triple by Uechi and a sacrifice fly by Finney. HPU scored three times in the seventh on a Colton Brown triple and Daniel RBI double and a wild pitch. HSU scored a run in the eighth on a wild throw after a wild pitch. Brown had a three-run home run in the eighth and Jake Sadler had a two-run single.
The Cowboys added three runs in the ninth. Uechi had an RBI double, Zack Patino and Brandon Walker had RBI singles.
Eric Zamora was solid for the Cowboys going seven innings allowing five runs and striking out six to improve to 3-1 on the year. Sam Hallen and Alex Bradley worked in relief.
All nine Cowboy starters had at least one hit in the 20-hit Cowboy attack. Jason Vause, Uechi, Zack de Luna and Jacques had three hits for the Cowboys. Uechi drove in five runs and Finney scored three times and drove in three.
Corey Howie took the loss for Howard Payne, allowing 10 runs on 13 hits in six innings. The Jackets used seven relievers to get through the final three innings. Colton Brown led the Yellowjacket offense with two hits and four RBIs.
HSU is now 8-9 on the year and 5-8 in league play. HPU fell to 8-10 overall and they are also 5-8 in ASC action. The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday (previous schedules had the game at noon so make note of the change.
