QB Anthony earns All-Academic honors
ABILENE, Texas —
ACU redshirt freshman quarterback Luke Anthony was selected to the 2017 Southland Conference All-Academic Football Team, which was announced Tuesday by the league office.
Anthony carries a 4.00 grade point average while majoring in financial management. He and Stephen F. Austin defensive back Marlon Walls – the Southland Football Student-Athlete of the Year – are the only two student-athletes on the team carrying a 4.00 GPA.
Southland Conference All-Academic Teams are voted upon by a head coach, sports information director and academic/compliance staff member from each school. Student-Athletes of the Year are voted upon by an awards committee which consists of one administrator from each member school.
Anthony moved into the starting spot with three games left in the season, but missed the final game of the season at Central Arkansas because of an injury suffered in ACU’s 44-35 loss to No. 4 Sam Houston State.
In his two starts against Northwestern State and Sam Houston State, he completed 66 of 112 passes for 642 yards and seven touchdowns, while throwing five interceptions. In the overtime loss at Northwestern State on Nov. 4, Anthony threw for 345 yards, which is the third-highest yardage total by an ACU quarterback in his debut as a starter.
The next week against Sam Houston State, Anthony threw for five touchdowns and rallied ACU from a 31-7 deficit to take a 35-31 lead over the Bearkats late in the fourth quarter before Sam Houston rallied to pull out the victory. Anthony finished the season 80 for 132 for 776 yards and 11 touchdowns against just four interceptions.
