Lady Coogs thrilled in return trip to postseason
ABILENE, Texas —
It’s been a long time coming. 3 years of getting close but left on the outside of the playoff bubble.
That changed last Friday for the Cooper girls basketball team, with a dominating win over Lubbock Coronado to secure the program’s first playoff trip since 2015.
“I didn't want to lose that game so I was like, well maybe if I come out strong, my team will all gel together and we'll all come out strong, which we did,” said senior Daniece Edwards.
The daunting task now – like the Cooper football team this year – is getting past a familiar face in the postseason. Cooper gets No. 5 Canyon in the first round next week – a team going for its 5th straight state title.
But Friday’s good vibes showed that the team could accomplish its goal. As their new mission begins on Monday.
"Coming in there and seeing the girls being so happy and jumping up and down -- screaming at the top of their lungs, that's a pride thing,” said second-year head coach Laruen Ash. They knew they had accomplished something that they knew that they could do."
Cooper and Canyon face off in the 1-5A bi-district round on Monday, 2/12 at 6 p.m. at Lubbock Christian H.S.
