Lady Lions off to best start ever
The Brownwood girls' basketball team has continued making history. The Lady Lions won the program's first outright district title last season, and are off to the team's best ever start to a season.
Even with last Friday's loss to Wylie in the District 5-4A opener, Brownwood has a 22-4 record with the other three losses coming to a pair of Class 5A schools and Class 3A heavyweight Colorado City.
"A lot of the team chemsitry carried over from last year," ninth-year head coach Heather Hohertz said. "A year more experience has helped them to learn how they have to play hard, and learn the system I teach. It's really got them going this year."
Four starters are back from the 2016-2017 squad, including point guard Mallory Garcia and shooting guard Sage Cupps.
"Our offensive game has been clicking lately pretty well," said Cupps. "We've been passing the ball and getting it to everybody, and playing team basketball."
The Lady Lions reached the 20-win mark before the end of 2017, the first time the program has won that many games prior to flipping the calendar.
Brownwood is ranked 14th in the latest Class 4A rankings released by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
The re-match against Wylie, and possibly a district championship deciding game, is January 23 in Brownwood.
