New giraffe at Dallas Zoo named ‘Witten’ after retiring Cowboys star
DALLAS, Texas -- A new giraffe at the Dallas Zoo has been named “Witten,” after just-retired Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten.
The naming of the calf, a male born April 25, comes after Witten retired following 15 seasons as a Cowboy.
"We're shifting from our typical tradition of naming a baby after its native heritage to honor a Texas legend and all around great guy," said Gregg Hudson, Dallas Zoo president and CEO, in a written statement.
"Our zookeepers were the first ones to jump on this naming opportunity. We're all huge fans of Jason, he's a real role model — on the field and in our community."
Witten, the football player, is joining ESPN as its lead analyst for the “Monday Night Football” telecast.
