A massive apartment fire in the New York City kills 12 and injures 4

The New York City Fire Department responds to a 4-alarm fatal fire Thursday night at an apartment building in the Bronx, one of New York City's boroughs.

BRONX, New York - A massive apartment fire has left 12 people dead, including a 1-year-old infant, and seriously injured four on Thursday night.

The fire started at 7 p.m. on the first floor a five-story building.

Witnesses report seeing residents, including small children, being carried away on stretches with burns on their bodies.

The building is estimated to be roughly a century old and is blocks from the Bronx Zoo.

Approximately 106 firefighters were battling the blaze in frigid temperatures, rescuing people in 15-degree weather.

New York City officials say the death toll is expected to climb, and is the deadliest fire the city has seen in decades.
