Brown County capital murder suspect waives arriagnment
BROWN COUNTY, Texas - The capital murder suspect who confessed to raping and killing a Lake Brownwood woman 18 months after the crime took place has waived his right to an arraignment.
Ryan Derek Riggs, 21, declined to have his capital murder charge read to him in open court on Dec. 11, according to court documents.
The 35th Judicial District Judge approved a pre-trial motion on Thursday filed by his attorney to allow Riggs' defense team as well as defense experts to visit him in his jail cell.
Riggs' lawyer is preparing for the state to pursue the death penalty, according to court documents.
But, 35th Judicial District Attorney Micheal Murray previously told KTXS his office hasn't decided on that yet.
Sheriff Vance Hill said Riggs raped and killed Chantay Blankinship in May of 2016 using a lawn mower blade.
