Cooper trio named to AP 5A All-State team

The 2017 Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Class 5A all-state high school football team was released Wednesday with three Cooper Cougars named to the coveted list. Voting was based on regular-season performance, and it was headlined by senior RB Tyrees Whitfield.ABILENE, Texas -

Cooper’s work horse on the ground was named to the first team after rushing for a whopping 1,604 yards and 30 touchdowns this season. In the process, Whitfield became Cooper's 2nd highest career rusher in program history with over 3,200 career yards to his name.

The other two making the list were honorable mentions. Myller Royals was added at receiver. The Texas Tech commit who signed on Wednesday, leaves Cooper as its all-time catches, reception yards, and receiving touchdown leader.

Also named an honorable mention, was defensive back K.J. Kelley. the senior from Cisco anchored a talented secondary, and had recorded 5 interceptions this season.
