ABILENE, Texas - A church in Hawley is looking to build a shooting range in their backyard, but some neighbors surrounding the property are voicing their concerns.
Clearfork Baptist Church refused to comment prior to a city council public hearing Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Hawley ISD's administration building. Hawley City Council decided to table the item Tuesday and will revisit the issue on Aug. 8 at Hawley City Hall.
Melody Barr, a resident who lives near the church, said she's upset about the noise the shooting range will bring. She believes it will be impossible to find peace with the consistent gunshot sounds in her backyard. Barr is also concerned about the danger the shooting range might pose.
"I am mad they never gave us any acknowledgement that this was going to happen," Barr said. "I just hope the outcome will be good and I just hope they will make the right choice when they vote on it with the city council."
Hawley's city ordinance does not allow people to discharge firearms in city limits, but the city council has the ability to amend that.
