KTXS Forecast: Second push of freezing temperatures with icing expected
Sunday will see another round of cold air arrive as a stronger cold front moves through the region. Highs into the afternoon will be below freezing in the mid/ upper 20s with cloudy skies. Winds will be out of the northeast at 15-25 mph which will make wind chill values be in the low/ mid-teens. With mist/ fog likely again, there is a good chance of more icing on roadways. There will be a 10 percent chance of light isolated showers into the afternoon and overnight which means a wintry mix/ snow flurries could be possible.ABILENE, Texas -
Sunday night as everyone is getting ready to ring in the New Year, lows will be dropping to the low teens with wind chill values in the single digits. Icing on roadways is expected and a wintry mix/ snow flurries will be possible overnight. You will need to plan accordingly, dress very warmly and stay off the roadways if you don’t have to be out!
On Monday, which is the first day of 2018, highs will be keeping below freezing in the mid-20s with mostly cloudy skies and winds from the northeast at 5-15 mph. Icing is still expected due to the cold temperatures across the region. Monday night lows will be back in the teens with cloudy conditions.
Tuesday, we will we a hair warmer in the upper 20s/ low 30s with mostly cloudy skies and winds will keep out of the northeast at 5-10 mph. Lows into Tuesday night are going to be in the low 20s.
On Wednesday, it looks like highs will warm to above freezing temperatures and be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 30s/ low 40s and have southeast winds at 5-10 mph. Wednesday night we will be partly cloudy and in the mid-20s.
Thursday through Saturday currently look like they will be in the low/ mid-40s with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies and have winds mainly out of the north/ northeast at 5-10 mph. Lows through this period are going to be below freezing in the upper 20s/ low 30s with continued cloud cover.
Note: Over the next several days we are expecting frigid temperatures and icing on roadways. You will need to keep up with any weather updates since weather conditions can change rapidly. The main concern is the conditions of roadways as we head into New Year festivities with many people planning to travel.
You will need to make sure all pipes are cover well and into Sunday night make sure you drip your faucets inside to prevent them from freezing and breaking.
You’ll need to have all outdoor pets come inside if you can manage to. If not, they will need to have a warm proper outdoor shelter that protects them from the winds and that their water source doesn't freeze over. Particularly going into Sunday night, temperatures could prove hazardous to life without a proper shelter.
