H-E-B could be one step closer to opening a long rumored grocery store/gas station in south Abilene.

Thursday evening, the Abilene City Council approved rezoning the former Compass Bank location at the corner of Buffalo Gap and Antilley Roads “in order build a new retail development to include fuel sales."

John Rose, who was at the meeting, told council he represented someone trying to acquire the property.

"The burning question, Mr. Rose, are you prepared to comment on whether or not there is going to be a grocery store built there?" asked Councilman Bruce Kreitler.

“I can't give you a short time frame as to when that would be because I don't know. But I do work for a grocery company," Rose said.

According to Rose’s LinkedIn page, that grocery company is San Antonio-based H-E-B. He's been the chain's Senior Due Diligence Manager for more than five years.

KTXS has been in contact with H-E-B since 2011 about plans to build a second store in Abilene. That is when it bought the two large tracts of land directly south of the former bank.

The 19-acres consist of the former Lack's furniture store and 15-acres of land behind it.

H-E-B's location on Barrow and South 14th streets has a gas station.
