The Abilene Animal Shelter set a new record that is definitely worth sharing.

According to the City of Abilene and Rescue the Animals, SPCA, the shelter euthanized 3,622 animals last year, their fewest ever.

“Of all the statistics concerning the Animal Shelter, this is significant in that it shows we are reducing the population of unwanted dogs and cats,” said Rescue the Animals, SPCA President Paul Washburn. “Rescue the Animals, SPCA would like to congratulate Abilene Animal Shelter staff on making great progress in 2018.

    • 2018 - 3,622
    • 2017 - 4,428
    • 2008 - 13,124

Over just the last year, the shelter has seen a 20% drop in euthanizations.

The city and RTA are hopeful the trend will continue thanks to the city's new low cost spay/neuter program.
