Abilene man, 18, charged in racing crash that killed 2 children

Hayden-Michael-Hammer (Williamson County Jail)

Police in Cedar Park – north of Austin -- have charged an Abilene man for a crash that left two children dead and their mother critically injured.

Hayden Michael Hammer, 18, is charged with two counts of racing on a highway causing death. He’s being held on $200,000 bond.

Police say Hammer was racing another truck on Jan. 10 when he hit a 2016 Nissan Rogue near Highway 183.

The driver of the Rouge, Zara Salman, 31, is still in a coma. Two passengers -- Daniel Chaudhary, 1, and Elijah Chaudhary, 8 -- were pronounced dead at the scene.

Daniel is Salman's biological child and Elijah is her step-son, police said.

Police say they were able to reconstruct the crash using witness statements and surveillance video.

They’re still trying to identify the driver of the other truck, which is a maroon or red Ford F-250. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 512-260-4600.

According to Taylor County court records, Hammer was arrested in Abilene last year for theft and criminal mischief.
