Abilene man arrested after allegedly shooting at motorist

Marcus Bennett, 32, was arrested for aggravated assault during June 2016 after he allegedly fired a gun at a motorist multiple times.

ABILENE, Texas - Multiple witnesses helped Abilene police arrest a man who they say fired a gun at a motorist multiple times Saturday afternoon.

According to a police report, a man was driving north on Hickory Street when 32-year-old Marcus Bennett approached him in another vehicle, and pointed a handgun at him as he passed by. The man saw the gun and sped away; he heard a gunshot, but his vehicle wasn't hit.

Near the 1400 block of Orange Street, the victim said he turned around to get Bennett's license plate, but Bennett had stopped and exited his vehicle with a handgun, according to the report. There were multiple groups of people in the area, and a few said they heard the first gunshot.

The victim saw Bennett approaching him with a gun, so he reversed to escape before hearing another gunshot, the report said. Some of the witnesses reported seeing Bennett with a gun, but others said they could only see him going toward the victim.

When police found Bennett, he initially denied having any involvement with the incident until the witnesses came forward and his shoe prints were found in the alley he reportedly fled in. He then claimed the victim was tailgating him and he was being chased.

Bennett then admitted to stopping his vehicle to approach the victim, but he denied having a gun. The gun was not located, according to the arrest report.

Bennett was arrested for aggravated assault and taken to the Taylor County Jail. He is being held on a bond of $25,000.
