Abilene Police: Murder suspect admits injuring baby, cleaning after death

ABILENE, Texas - Abilene murder suspect Amber Craker admitted to police that she had "given birth and caused obvious injuries" to her newborn and that she cleaned up the scene after the baby's death.

That's according to the 18-year-old's Abilene Police Department arrest report.

"(Craker) then stated she hid the deceased baby in a trash can," the arrest report said.

Craker was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with murder and tampering with evidence after her dead newborn was found in her south Abilene home.

Police have confirmed that Craker is the birth mother of the dead female baby.

According to police, Craker was arrested shortly after her release from the hospital. After being charged, her bond was set at $300,000. She remains in the Taylor County Jail.

Damian Scott Cate, 22, was arrested late Mondayand charged with murder in connection with the homicide as well. Court documents say additionalfamily members may face charges.

Cate admitted to police that he "held the baby while his fianc (Craker) caused obvious injuries," according to his Abilene Police Department arrest report.

"(Cate) also admitted to cleaning up the scenes, including removing the bloody bed sheets and placing them in the washer," the report said.

Police say Craker went to Hendrick Medical Center for bleeding – and a doctor alerted authorities that Craker had just had a baby.

Police went to her residence and found the baby dead inside, along with placenta stuck in a sewage drain. The body was sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Autopsy results haven't been released yet.
