ABILENE, Texas - An Abilene Cooper High School student is dead after his bicycle struck a pickup pulling a trailer at the intersection of South 27th Street and Sayles Boulevard.
Police have now identified the student as being Nathan Fife, 15
The accident occurred about 6:45 a.m.
Police say Fife was riding south on Sayles Boulevard in the northbound outside lane approaching the traffic signal at South 27th. The pickup driver was heading eastbound on South 27th in the outside lane approaching the traffic light at Sayles.
According to police, Fife -- who wasn't wearing a helmet -- ran the red light and struck the truck.
Justice of the Peace Mike McAullife pronounced Fife dead at the scene.
"Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash," an Abilene Police Department news release said. "... Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Nathan Fife as well as tot he students and faculty of Cooper High School."
Cooper High School will have counselors in place today for students, according to police.
