Driver in deadly suspected racing crash arrested twice in Abilene

The 18-year-old Abilene man arrested for his suspected role in a racing crash near Austin that killed two children and critically injured their mom was arrested twice last year in Abilene.

According to Taylor County court records, Hayden Michael Hammer, 18, was arrested for theft and criminal mischief.

Police say Hammer drove an ATV onto the newly renovated 13th green at Abilene Country Club in April, causing $10,715 in damage.

He was arrested in August after police say he admitted riding his four-wheeler onto the green and spinning his tires.

In September, police say he cut the lock off a storage shed and stole an ATV owned by the Wylie Little League. He then sold it on Facebook to a man in Brownwood for $1,150 – which is less than a quarter of the value.

Hammer told police he knew the combination of the lock, but cut it “to take any pieces that may have his fingerprints” and to “make it look like a random burglary,” according to court documents.

He was arrested for the theft in October and released the same day on $50,000 bond.
