Ecca Volunteer Fire Department in need of funding for new fire station

The Ecca Volunteer Fire Department held their 16th annual Texas Wild Bunch Bonanza fundraiser. For the past few years they’ve been trying to raise enough funds to build a new fire station, and this is their only fundraiser for the year.

Ecca Volunteer Fire Chief Gary Young said they need a new station to fit all their equipment.

"The station we're currently in was built in 1980, and it will not house a modern fire engine,” Young said. “It simply is too small."

The event had live music, auctions and a lot of food. They had chili, fried fish, and a thousand jalapeño poppers. Some of the poppers had chocolate and peanut butter wrapped in bacon.

They also had a live and silent auction with different items provided by people and businesses, and they sold approximately 300 tickets.

Young said that one of the things he enjoys the most is how the community comes together.

"There are so many people that come together and sponsor this -- not only the corporate sponsors but individual giving, the volunteers that work this and the cooks," Young said.

Being a volunteer firefighter isn't for everyone, according to Young, but he said there’s a big need for volunteers.

"Somebody has to do it,” Young said. “When you leave the city limits you're in the hands of a volunteer, no matter where you are."

Young said they don't know when they'll be able to build their new station, but they'll have the same fundraiser again next year.
