Murder of Abilene realtor remains unsolved nearly two years later

Tom Niblo was found shot to death in his Woodridge Drive home in south Abilene on Dec. 12, 2016.

The two-year anniversary of the Tom Niblo murder investigation is next Wednesday.

While it remains unsolved, Chief Stan Standridge said his department has spent a lot of time, effort and resources on the case.

Standridge said the department has incurred "significant costs" to test the countless items of evidence seized.

Forensic Evaluations

  • 2017 - $48,350
  • 2018 - $30,800

APD spent $18,000 more in 2017 for forensic evaluations compared to 2018.

Standridge said most of that difference can be attributed to the Niblo investigation.

Niblo was killed on December 12, 2016 in the bedroom of his home on Woodridge Drive.

The 54-year-old real estate agent was shot eight times.

Autopsy results show he was shot in the head, face, abdomen, torso, and both arms and legs.

Niblo's brother in-law, Luke Sweetser, remains a "person of interest," according to Standridge.

Sweetser was arrested two days after the murder on on unrelated charges.

He's charged with theft of a firearm.

The murder investigation led police to a storage facility where they found stolen guns in a safe.

Sweetser's case has not yet gone to trial.
