A new statue at the Taylor County Courthouse honors the life of an Abilene soldier who was killed in combat.

A 'Battlefield Cross' statue -- helmet, rifle and boots -- was placed in the courthouse lobby.

A plaque on the front has information about Army Pfc. Adam Harris.

Harris had just celebrated his 21st birthday when he was killed by a sniper in Mosul, Iraq in 2004.

“You never think it’s going to happen to you,” his mother, Denise Bush, said at the time. “It’s just devastating.”

"He was a great young American with a great heart,” said then Dyess Air Force Base Commander Col. Garret Harencak. “He always wanted to serve, but he wanted to make his parents proud. He certainly did that. He made us all proud. His sacrifice will never be forgotten by those who love this country and those who choose to defend it.”
