Pharmacy students from Texas Tech University and students from Hardin-Simmons University's Physician Assistant Program hosted Texas Two Step CPR classes Saturday at the Mall of Abilene.

The free event provided CPR compression techniques and blood pressure screenings. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and stroke, remain the leading cause of death globally.

KTXS News spoke with Texas Tech University pharmacy student Tarak Patel, who explained why Saturday's event was so important.

"Today, we are doing basic CPR education, we are just trying to teach the public the Texas Two Step. Call 911 and just start compressions until emergency services or somebody that is certified to complete CPR is present,"said Patel.
