Merkel Police Department asks for public's help in locating burglary suspects

The Merkel Police Department is looking for two suspects who they believe stole someone's vehicle and burglarized their garage.

According to a press release, the Merkel Police Department believes that a male and female are driving north on Highway 277 toward Wichita Falls and were last seen in a dark green or black 2010 to 2013 Ford Explorer with possible paper tags.

The alleged crimes began on Sunday morning on the 1000 block of Avondale Drive when the two suspects stole a 2012 GMC Sierra.

Police said that the victim, who arrived home at around 7:45 a.m., left the keys in the ignition of his vehicle because he only intended to be home "for only a few minutes."

When the victim returned to get back into the vehicle, the vehicle was gone.

According to police, the suspects also entered the victim's open garage, but nothing was stolen and the suspects "only rummaged" through it.

Police tracked the stolen vehicle to a Walmart in Stamford using the vehicle's OnStar system, but by the time that the authorities reached the Walmart in Stamford, the suspects had already fled from the store.

According to the press release, the two suspects used victim's credit card to purchase fuel and items at Walmart and police last traced the card's use to sometime between noon and 1 p.m. on Sunday in Seymour.

Merkel Police Sgt. Phillip Conklin said that the victim works at the Merkel Independent School District and that the suspects stole the district's credit card, charging more than $1,000 so far to the card.

The district's credit card has since been deactivated and Sgt. Conklin said that they will be "pursuing additional charges once the suspects are identified."

Walmart surveillance camera footage captured both of the suspects inside of the store.

Police are describing the male suspect as Hispanic, measuring somewhere between 5'5" to 5'8" and weighing approximately 180 to 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing black shorts, a black t-shirt with a long-sleeved gray undershirt, black shoes and a black cap with the white letters "F.B.I." embroidered on the front of the cap.

The Merkel Police Department said that the male suspect appears to have a teardrop tattoo under his right eye.

The second suspect is a white female measuring somewhere between 5'5" to 5'7" in height and weighing approximately 130 to 160 pounds.

She was last seen on surveillance video wearing a gray v-neck shirt with the word "PINK" on the front of the shirt with a black shirt under it, denim cut-off shorts, white shoes and large "police/aviator" sunglasses.

The Merkel Police Department said that the female suspect has two tattoos in the shape of stars on her left and right calves and tattoos on her right upper forearm and possibly on her right bicep.

Anyone with any information on the two suspects is asked to call the Merkel Police Department at 325-428-9226.
