The Department of Public Safety is investigating a rollover accident involving members of the Howard Payne University baseball team.

A 15-passenger van rolled over around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday about eight miles south of Rising Star.

HPU says seven baseball players and two staff members were returning to Brownwood from a weekend series in Hawaii.

The team played five games at Hawaii Pacific University to open the season.

Two players were transported to Brownwood Regional Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.

The Rising Star Volunteer Fire Department says six others suffered minor injuries.

“As saddened as we are about the accident, we are also deeply grateful that there has been no loss of life and that the preliminary prognosis is positive moving forward,” said Dr. Paul Armes, HPU interim president. “Truly, this is one of those times when our relationship with Christ encourages, strengthens and helps us to rest in and rely on Him.”

KTXS has reached out to DPS, Rising Star police and the Rising Star VFD.

A DPS spokesperson said they might have more information to release this afternoon.
