Rule City Council shuts down police department, sells off equipment

The City of Rule no longer has a police department.

Mayor Pro-Tem Alan Beard told KTXS the council voted unanimously at last month's meeting to shut down the department due to financial issues. It also had trouble keeping a police chief.

Earlier this month, the council accepted a bid to sell equipment inside the city's police vehicle. It is now being used by the city water department.

The police department consisted solely of the police chief. That position has been vacant for months.

Beard said they've had four police chiefs over the past four years, including David Wright who was fired in 2015 after confronting a boy who got into a fight with his daughter.

In the event of an emergency, the Haskell County Sheriff's Office will respond.

Rule is a town of less than 700 people.
