Scurry County destroys dozens of illegal gaming machines
SNYDER, Texas -- Scurry County destroyed dozens of illegal gaming machines Monday morning.
The machines were seized Aug. 11 when police raided a game room in Snyder.
The owner of the game room, 38-year-old Y Ly Tran, pleaded guilty last month to possession of a gambling device and agreed to forfeit the 30 machines and $10,544.11 in cash. In exchange, he was sentenced to a year of probation.
Scurry County Attorney Mike Hartmann said the machines were similar to slot machines you see in Las Vegas. What made them illegal was the cash payments made to players.
Hartmann said when he first took office in 1997, he sent warning letters to all the game rooms about illegal gaming machines and they all shut down on their own.
He said over the years, a few have popped up here and there.
But this is the first time they have ever seized, forfeited and destroyed illegal gaming machines.
