CROSS PLAINS, Texas -- Big Country firefighters temporarily shut down a lane on Hwy 279 Wednesday morning as they worked to put out a small fire.

A trailer carrying Texas broomweed caught on fire just south of Cross Plains sending plumes of white smoke into the sky.

Broomweed is a type of dry flower. The driver said he was traveling to Goldthwaite from Wichita Falls when he saw smoke in his rear-view mirror.

The driver said he detached the trailer, left it on the road's shoulder and watched flames engulf it.

The Cross Plains, Rising Star and Lake Brownwood Bridge volunteer fire departments responded to the scene.

No one was injured in the blaze.
