Fiery crash in Brown County kills 1, closes highway


A Brownwood woman is dead and two other people, including the woman's husband, were injured in a fiery crash on Highway 279 in Brown County on Tuesday afternoon.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said that Gary Dan Baker, 62, of Brownwood, and his wife, were headed north on Highway 279 when Baker turned left toward County Road 134, north of Brownwood, and into the path of an oncoming pickup truck.

The Ford Explorer that Baker was driving collided with the pickup truck, hit a utility pole and burst into flames.

Baker's wife, Judy Delosantos Baker, 63, of Brownwood, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gary Baker was flown by helicopter to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.

The driver of the pickup truck, Logan Charles Allumbaugh, 26, of Abilene, was taken to Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

The crash happened at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Highway 279 remains shut down as of 7:50 p.m.

More than 870 Oncor customers lost electricity as a result of the wreck, which Oncor estimates will be restored by 2 a.m. on Wednesday.
