ABILENE, Texas — Abilene police say the number of rapes reported in 2018 (142) were up 51-percent
According to crime stats released Tuesday, children (ages 0-17) were the victim in 62 of those cases. That is 44-percent of all rapes in 2018.
“Child abuse is very real in Abilene and Taylor County," said Chief Stan Standridge. "I hope these numbers ultimately shock the (conscience) as it relates to child abuse.”
Standridge said 30 of the 142 rapes involved alcohol and drug use.
Thirty two of the rapes reported in 2018 occurred before 2018.
Standridge attributed that to the national "Me Too" movement and women being more comfortable with coming forward.
