City looking for county funding for the proposed downtown Abilene Hotel/Expo Center

For the second time this year, the City of Abilene wants Taylor County to take less tax money from a possible downtown Abilene hotel in order to help fund the $60 million project.

The Taylor County Commissioners rejected the idea back in May.

Mayor of Abilene Anthony Williams took to social media and continued to advocate for a $60 million hotel/expo center being built in downtown Abilene and he posted a message on Facebook in support of making it happen.

"We're trying to grow Abilene," said Mayor Williams.

Mayor Williams is once again going before the Taylor County Commissioners on Tuesday morning and he wants them to give up a portion of Taylor County's property tax to help fund the hotel.

"There are lots of events that would come to Abilene if we had a downtown hotel," said Mayor Williams.

So far, the City of Abilene has committed their tax revenue from the property to the project and the State of Texas is giving up a portion of the state hotel occupancy fee to help out.

In addition to that, Mayor Williams said that almost $8 million have already been raised in private donations for the downtown hotel.

"This hotel will provide 129 jobs [for] around $30,000 a year," said Mayor Williams.

Back in May, the Taylor County Commissioners shut down the same request from the City of Abilene for Taylor County property tax dollars.

"The county and the city, we have very different issues," said Taylor County Commissioner Randy Williams.

Commissioner Williams voted against the tax abatement six months ago and he said that Taylor County needs every cent of their tax dollars and that a new downtown hotel could hurt existing business for other hotels in the City of Abilene.

"This can't help but negatively impact them if a hotel goes in downtown and takes all of the conventions coming to town. Of course, they want to be in that hotel next to the convention center," said Commissioner Williams.

The meeting regarding potential funding for the downtown Abilene hotel will take place on Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Taylor County Courthouse.
