Attorney Cory Clements has field to run against Abilene city councilman Kyle McAlister.

"After a lot of thought, I have decided to run for City Council Place 5! I look forward to the opportunities we have to make a difference for the citizens of Abilene," said Clements in a social media post.

When Clements ran against Donna Albus in 2017, he said he supported a downtown convention center style hotel.

He also wanted to look at changes to regulations that would lead to a more vibrant downtown area, attracting more shows and live music.

"I think there are some things we can do to make that easier for people to bring in that business, not just to downtown, but to the city as a whole, make it easier to bring in businesses that wouldn't otherwise think Abilene is a destination for them," Clements said in February 2017.

McAlister has been under fire for several weeks for a history of Facebook posts that were called racist.

Hispanic community leaders have called for his resignation. They also wanted the council to censure him.
